Mathem’s facility was awarded for Building of the Year 2023

Last night, March 28, Mathem got the award for Årets Bygge (Building of the Year) 2023 in the category Industry/Logistics/Retail.  It is the construction industry’s most prestigious award in the field of civil engineering which is awarded by the magazine Byggindustrin. Logistic Contractor has built and developed the facility in Larsboda, south of Stockholm. The award was received by Mikael Hemmingsen, project manager Future Logistics at Mathem and Martin Häller, vice president at Logistic Contractor.

The 36,000 sqm state-of-the-art facility was put into use in November 2022. In addition to the normal-temperature warehouse area, there are both refrigerated and frozen warehouses as well as one of Europe’s largest automation facilities, which handles the grocery bags from order to delivery. The building also houses a large office area. In direct connection, a parking garage of 9,000 sqm has been built with a large number of charging posts for Mathem’s delivery vehicles.

Mathem, Krook & Tjäder and ourselves are of course very proud and happy to first go to the final and then win The Building of the Year 2023. The win is proof of our capacity to handle complex construction projects and we are pleased to have been able to realize the visions all parties had when we started the project”, says Martin Häller, at Logistic Contractor.

The building is tentatively certified according to Miljöbyggnad Guld by the Sweden Green Building Council and is largely supplied by renewable electricity that comes from Stockholm’s largest solar cell plant on the roof.  Social sustainability has also been an important parameter during the design, with a strong focus on creating a good working environment for all employees.

For us at Mathem, it is fantastic to be in a building that is completely adapted to our own needs. The fact that there is also a consistent sustainability thinking, both in terms of energy supply and that the building offers our employees one of logistics Sweden’s best working environments, means that it is full pot for us, says Mikael Hemmingsen, project manager Future Logistics at Mathem.

The inspiration for the angular futuristic shapes that characterize the expression of the facade, Krook & Tjäder has received from the old quarry where the building is erected.

The height differences in the plot created challenges for the logistical flow, but it was chosen for its central location. In the project, we have given great care to the work environment and sustainability. Both for Mathem’s employees but also for the immediate area, as the facility is adjacent to other buildings and customers. The surrounding outdoor environment also reflects and highlights the surrounding nature, which follows further into the indoor environment, says Hanna Roos, architect at Krook & Tjäder.

The jury’s motivation reads:

(translated from Swedish)

The cooperation has been close between tenant, client and contractor to reach an ambitious end result. In order to increase capacity in the business, a well-thought-out facility has been created for the benefit of the staff, where food and supplies are at the center.
