When DHL planned the terminal at Kastrup Airport that Logistic Contractor is now building, long-term sustainability was an important issue. Resources such as solar, rain and groundwater create conditions for energy-efficient operation of the 26,000 sqm building.
On the roof, 1,900 square meters of solar cells will be fitted that will be able to generate up to 280 MWh of electricity for the property each year. On days when electricity production exceeds what is needed for own needs, the surplus will be sold on the public electricity network. The roof is also given another important task and that is to collect rainwater. The rainwater is led to a large tank where it is purified and then used for flushing toilets and for the vehicle wash to be installed in the building. During periods when it does not rain as much, it is possible to top up the system from the municipal water network.
The groundwater will help to both heat and cool the property through a so-called aquifer thermal energy storage system (ATES). In connection with the groundworks, holes have been drilled where groundwater is to be pumped up. During the colder part of the year, it is used for heat production, with the addition of district heating when needed. In summer, the groundwater will contribute to the building’s comfort cooling. The groundwater is circulated as in a closed system and pumped back into the ground after it has been used.
– The issue of sustainability is important for both DHL and us at Logistic Contractor and we are pleased to be building in a way that utilizes renewable energy sources. In addition, we work with life cycle analyzes in this project and we will also carry out a calculation of the building’s carbon dioxide emissions as preparations for an environmental certification, says Sandu Nylmon, CEO of Logistic Contractor A/S.
